Mobile phones, social media and hashtags are making secrets much harder to keep, which makes our job of snooping far easier. Take the Specialized Status for example, it was a bike offered by the big S in 2014 aimed at the enduro and freeride market, but it has been off the books until now.

Reports of a new Status have been floating about since May when a few Instagram posts showed the bike under a handful of sponsored riders. Since then the bike has been shared over 300 times on Instagram under the hashtag #statusmtb but customers still can’t buy one and Specialized hasn’t officially launched it.

What’s keeping Specialized from releasing the 2021 Status to the masses is anyone’s guess, but we have a strong suspicion that the world being in the middle of a pandemic could be the main reason. Still, that doesn’t seem to have stopped everyone from having some fun on the new rig.

Looking back at the original Status and this new version it’s safe to say that the new bike is a more rounded trail/enduro bike instead of the gravity focussed bruiser it once was.

Another interesting point is the specifications of these bikes. Other than a handful of athlete bikes decked out with Öhlins suspension most of the 2021 Status on Instagram have budget builds. Entry-level suspension and SRAM NX gears point at affordable pricing.

The suspension system also hints at affordability appearing to share similar features to the Stumpjumper Evo.

Those are all the details we have at this time, but take a look at the 2021 Specialized Status on Instagram and let us know what you find.

Handy with a welder, clever on CAD and a perfectionist when it’s time to polish, frame maker Ralf Holleis of Huhn Cycles doesn’t follow convention when building bikes. His past projects have included carbon fibre frames, and fixed geared road bikes, but the MoorHuhn is the type of bike that we get hot for.

This simple looking steel suspension bike with single pivot design might appear basic, but the technology and concepts used to build the polished performer is NASA level stuff.

huhn cycles moorhuhn

While most frame builders would be happy to cut and mitre tubes, Ralf decided that a cutting edge 3D printed technology would be the way to go. The head tube, bottom bracket and shock yoke are all 3D printed steel components that are made using (frigging) lasers and CNC machined to perfection.

The lugs are then hand welded to Reynolds 953 stainless steel tubing (Columbus Zone for the rear) then hand polished to the mirror finish you see in these frame photos. The finished product is an enduro/trail bike with 129mm of rear-wheel travel and 29in wheels

Oh, and if you want one the frame alone will cost the best part of €6,000, which is well worth it!

Huhn Cycles Moorhuhn gallery

The European Bike Project

While creating the Moorhuhn Ralf was challenged to join the European Bike Project, a competition between frame makers to see if it’s possible to build a full-suspension bike that uses only components made in Europe. The idea behind the friendly competition is to highlight lesser-known manufactures across Europe and support local bike business and communities.

Ralf is the first to complete his build using European parts from Intend, Ingrid, Gemini and many others (full build list below).

eBikes bring the joy of riding to a much broader market, and not everyone hopping on an eMTB want’s to live the enduro lifestyle. Radon realises this and so has released the Radon JEALOUS and eMTB hardtail that the German brand calls a hybrid style bike.

The Jealous isn’t a Hybrid in the traditional sense and actually shares a lot more in common with a hardtail XC mountain bike, but it’s clear that Radon is aiming the Jealous at riders who want to ride for leisure rather than the adrenaline rush.

With prices starting at just €2699, the Jealous is an extremely affordable eMTB and although it might not suit hardcore trail hooning the build and features are actually impressive.

The standout highlight is obviously that Gen 4 Bosch CX motor. This compact eBike motor is the same that’s found on electric bikes that cost 5 times as much and is a strong performer boasting 75Nm of torque and Bosch’s impressive eMTB mode.

Radon hasn’t cut corners on the power plant either, with the Jealous receiving a full-fat 625Wh Powertube battery neatly integrated into the downtube of the Jealous’ frame.

Base model Jealous bikes are built up with entry-level parts from Shimano, DT Swiss, Selle Royal, Schwalbe and RockShox.

But the big question is would you prefer this or the utterly fantastic Decathlon Stilus full suspension eMTB?

2021 Evil Wreckoning released with 166mm travel and up to 190mm RockShox Zeb fork! https://essentialmtb.com/2020/07/2021-evil-wreckoning-released-with-166mm-travel-and-up-to-190mm-rockshox-zeb-fork/ Wed, 08 Jul 2020 18:41:24 +0000 https://essentialmtb.com/?p=1027 The 2021 Evil Wreckoning is big on wheels, and big on travel. The 29er has been dialled up to 166mm of rear wheel travel and will happily hit the slopes with a 190mm RockShox Zeb! Is this the longest travel 29er enduro bike on the planet?

The post 2021 Evil Wreckoning released with 166mm travel and up to 190mm RockShox Zeb fork! appeared first on Essential MTB.

]]>
Evil bikes launched the big wheeled Wreckoning back in 2016, 5 years on and this downhill game changer now comes with 166mm of rear wheel travel and will happily run a 190mm RockShox Zeb. With 29in wheels and that much travel the 2021 Evil Wreckoning could be the longest travel, 29er enduro bike on the planet.

But just because you can doesn’t mean you have too. Evil designed the 2021 Wreckoning to run on ‘just’ 160mm on the front with the flip of a chip.

Sure downhill is what the Evil Wreckoning is all about, but you do need to get up those hills first. A steep 77° gives the bike a pedal-friendly geometry, and with a longer reach and 64.6° head angle, it’s no slouch on the way back down.

Updates aren’t only travel and geometry deep, the bike also receives Super Boost spacing, a 157mm wide rear hub, short chain stays and a wider main pivot and larger hardware to prevent flex.

Keeping those cool carbon lines clean is full internal hose and cable routing, and huge amounts of stealth rubber to keep your chain from digging into the carbon and cutting noise.

As riders attempt to push the limits and start to reach the boundaries of what’s possible on two wheels, component manufactures have to reinvent, develop and create new products that can keep up, and this is why RockShox as released the Zeb for 2021.

Not only an enduro fork, but the RockShox Zeb also wants to be the new face of eMTB suspension and even hopes to reignite the Freeride flame. The MY21 Zeb family launches with 5 forks covering everyone from entry-level hucker, to Sam Hill wannabe.

Table of Contents

What's new on the RockShox Zeb?

rockshox zeb
rockshox zeb

First and foremost is the sheer size of the Zeb. Built on an entirely new 38mm chassis, this fork is larger than both the Lyrik and BoXXer. The larger stanchions, stronger machined crown and burlier chassis all help to make the Zeb as much as 21.5% stiffer than the Lyrik.

A new arch design increases the gap clearance for oversize frame designs, especially useful for eMTB bikes, and with new fender mounts, the chiselled good looks of the Zeb won’t be spoiled by velcro straps or zip-ties.

Inside the Zeb uses the updated Debonair spring, designed to sit higher in the travel and prevent diving, however, revised and optimised for use in the larger diameter fork. The Charger 2.1 damper retains the same performance and high/low-speed compression adjustments, but there is also a factory-tuned Charger R damper fitted to entry-level and eMTB specific Zeb forks.

Each of the 5 Zeb models all use an air-spring, however RockShox regulars will find that the larger chassis requires lower air pressures to achieve the correct level of sag, and air tokens can be installed for further fine tuning.

Below are the complete SRAM descriptions, features and specifications of each new Zeb fork.

RockShox Zeb FAQ

Why did you make the RockShox Zeb?

ZEB bridges the gap between Lyrik and BoXXer. Our athletes, and equally our customers, have been asking for a stiffer, more aggressive fork for long travel applications.

What is the intended use of the RockShox Zeb?

The larger diameter stanchions and stiffer overall chassis are best suited to long travel Enduro bikes (170-190mm) and also eMTB’s. The overall aesthetic of ZEB means the fork is suited to larger diameter frame tubes such as those found on eMTB’s.

How much stiffer is ZEB than Lyrik? Is it stiffer than a BoXXer?

Torsional Stiffness = 21.5% Stiffer
Side Bending Stiffness = 7% Stiffer
Fore/Aft Bending Stiffness = 2% Stiffer
*Lyrik vs ZEB test lab data- both forks are 29″ 180mm travel

Is the Zeb a 20mm or 15mm axle?

We considered 20mm, but ultimately ended up going the 15mm route. A properly designed 15mm axle can be as stiff or stiffer than a 20mm axle. Riders can also use Torque Caps to improve stiffness using a 15mm axle means that more riders can benefit from equipping their bike with ZEB without having to change the front wheel to accommodate a larger diameter axle.

Are there different steerer diameters available for ZEB?

ZEB will be offered with both 1.5″ and 1.8″ tapered steerer options.

Does Zeb use the same tokens as Lyrik and Pike?

ZEB will use the grey volume spacer that you are familiar with from all of our 35mm chassis forks.

What rotor size can I use on RockShox Zeb?

ZEB is 200mm direct mount. For a 220mm rotor a 20mm post-mount adapter is needed. 203 Rotors can also be used with a corresponding spacer kit.

What is the RockShox Charger R damper?

The Charger R damper is a version of our current Internal Floating Piston (or IFP)-based Charger RC damper. The R version has a factory set compression assembly and features an easy to set up rebound adjuster. We think the ZEB R and this damper will find a perfect home on the front of many eMTB’s.

What is the axle to crown length difference between Zeb and Lyrik?

For the same travel, ZEB is 5mm longer axle-to-crown versus Lyrik.

Is Charger Damper 2.1 in the Zeb different to Lyrik Charger Damper 2.1?

The damping characteristics of the Charger 2.1 damper has remained unchanged from Lyrik. However the damper itself is architecturally different because it needs to fit into a 38mm stanchion fork, therefore it is not cross compatible with any of our 35mm chassis forks.

Why does the arch on Zeb sit much further out?

The design of the lower leg has to accommodate many factors – two of these include clearance for mud guards at full travel as well as headtube clearance at bottom out.

What is the largest size tire I can use with ZEB?

ZEB will accommodate tires up to 2.8″ on both 27.5″ and 29″ platforms.

What is the Dual Position Zeb?

Dual Position Zeb is aimed at the eMTB market and allows riders to adjust travel from 150-180mm on the trail for improved climbing performance especially on challenging terrain.

IF SOME IS GOOD, MORE IS BETTER

The Overtimepack allows you to ride your Powerplay farther than ever before, putting more time in on the trail before needing a charge.

The Overtimepack is a range extender for our Powerplay lineup that offers an additional 330 Wh of battery capacity. When combined with our massive 672 Wh Powerplay battery, you have over 1000 Wh to drain before it’s time to rest.

The Overtimepack drains its full 330 Wh capacity before you use any of the 672 Wh battery in your Powerplay. Your iWoc remote will read as fully charged until you begin to work your way through the main 672 Wh battery of the bike. The “RIDE MORE, FASTER, FURTHER” indicator on the Overtimepack will let you know how much of your 330 Wh battery remains.

No need to stop & swap batteries
Already plugged in, just keep riding.

Anti-rattle rigid attachment
Exterior battery mounts are notoriously sloppy. We offer a solid mount that’s designed for aggressive mountain biking.

Theft-deterrent design
Tooled attachment discourages the theft of expensive accessories.

A more comfortable way to carry more energy
No need to carry a heavy battery on your back. Not only is it unsafe, but it can also throw your balance off.

A better handling eMTB
Overtimepack pack is located down low on the bike by the drive.

Charging

You can use the standard Powerplay 5A charger for the Overtimepack (while attached). You can charge both batteries in parallel with two separate chargers even more quickly. Overtimepack can serve as a Jerrycan charger, filling the main battery without a charger. It takes 2.5 charges of the Overtimepack to Jerrycan fill a 672 Wh Powerplay battery completely.
